Simon Schubert (born 1976) is an artist based in Cologne, Germany, his birthplace. From 1997 to 2004 he trained at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf in the sculpture class of Irmin Kamp. Inspired by Surrealism as well as by Samuel Beckett, Schuberts works imagine architectonical settings, common situations and objects, whereas the material he uses are either simple or sophisticated – figurative installations, for which he varied materials - such as hair, feathers, clothing, plaster, wood, graphite, lacquer ,cardboard, lighting elements. Some of these figures are only backs, you can run around them without, however, to recognize a face - often forces itself something between viewer and sculpture, a curtain of hair or about a mirror, the open view is impossible. In both procedures, Schubert approaches to similar issues. Its themes revolve around loneliness, isolation, loss, and resolution, the artist is in search of the infinite in the finite.. Artist Yayoi Kusama in her studio in the psychiatric hospital in Tokyo and back in the days in her New York studio.
Having suffered nervous disorders and hallucinations since childhood, Kusama has chosen to live in a Tokyo psychiatric hospital for the past 38 years, and has built herself a studio opposite. Health permitting, she still makes a daily journey from the hospital to her studio to paint.
